This Thanksgiving, and every other day, there is always, always something to be thankful for.
Greetings people. Thanksgiving is approaching soon, and it is a lovely celebration. And its purpose is equally beautiful. I myself don’t celebrate it, but it is quite an interesting event.
It is a national holiday that people celebrate in Canada, USA and other places. As a day of being thankful for the bountiful harvest, people decided to celebrate this event. Moreover, in some countries, it is tied with other events.
First of all, citizens of USA celebrate Thankgiving on the fourth Thursday of every November. Since 1789, people have been celebrating it after the congress requested George Washington’s proclamation. The ‘First Thanksgiving’ is a celebration of the pilgrim’s first harvest in the New World. A three day feast, about 90 Native Americans and 53 pilgrims attended it.
On this day, people prepare feasts of Turkey and enjoy it with their families; something to be thankful for in my opinion 🙂
Thanksgiving : Traditions
Like many other events, Thanksgiving has some well known traditions too. Most noteable of these is the Turkey dinner. Seems like, over some time, it has become the trademark of Thanksgiving. Almost every dinner has a scrumptious, stuffed turkey. In some homes, members prefer vegetarian counterparts such as a turkey made out of tofu, salads, etc. As the entire family is involved, these portions are massive. ( I’d love to eat it all up heehee ) Another signature dish is the pumpkin pie, equally delicious and salivating. So a lovely, pleasing dinner is a noteable feature of this celebration.
Breaking the wishbone is another tradition that some families follow. Two people hold the wishbone ( a bone of the turkey’s chest ) and pull on it after making a wish. They believe that whoever gets the bigger portion of the wishbone will get their wish.
In addition to that, most families enjoy spending time with each other, doing small activities or watching the Thanksgiving Parade on the TV. It is a big parade, and somewhat a highlight of the celebration in the US. It includes extravagant floats, large hot air balloons and ravishing marching bands.
As the population has considerably increased over time, the percentage of turkeys that people utilize for Thanksgiving has increased drastically. Thus, every year, the President recieves a turkey to ‘pardon’ and allow it to live the rest of its life peacefully. Thats one lucky bird. As a result of all this, it makes one of the most important celebrations during the period of winter.
Did you know?
- In 1939, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the third Thursday instead of the fourth.
- Furthermore, the first parade didn’t feature balloons.
- The total turkeys that people consume every year is about 46 million or more.
- Black Friday is the day after this celebration. People officially recognize it as the day to start Christmas shopping ;D
- The first feast took place in 1621. It became a holiday only during the 1660s
- Moreover, Germany, Grenada, Korea, Japan also celebrate Thanksgiving ~
- Lastly, It is uncertain whether the first feast actually consisted of Turkey.
Life provides you with a lot of things. Sure, perhaps, it has been a horrible year, but otherwise, at the end of the day, you still have something that is of most importance to you. A lot of people in this world do not get to celebrate with their families, they strive to have even peace. Then why is it that we are never content with what we have? Maybe it is human nature, but sometimes, we need to step back and think about it. So on this day, remember to cherish what you have, but even more so, don’t forget to give and make others happy too. Give them something to be happy about; something they can be thankful for. And I am very sure, you will enjoy your time even more. Thus, I conclude this article, and I hope you have an amazing day all the same ❤
So at the end of the day, what are you thankful for?
