Even birds on a tree branch know that Yuno Gasai has a Yandere personality or that Kurisu Makise from Steins Gate is a proper Tsundere, but those aren’t the only Dere types in the anime and manga world. Are you surprised? If you dabbed a bit into this vast world, you probably don’t know. But if you have countless hours of animes and mangas on your side, you are definitely eager to find out who belongs to which personality! Let us expand your knowledge when it comes to the Dere types of characters.

The Dere Types Wiki explains the very meaning of the word, “ Dere comes from “deredere” (デレデレ), an onomatopoeia meaning “lovestruck” or “lovey-dovey“. Dere-type characters are characters that express their affection in different ways, or on different levels. Most of the dere types are how characters react to becoming lovestruck.

All Dere Types share the same or similar personality traits and some of them are arrogant, lazy, violent (aforementioned Yuno Gasai), kind, sad, shy, somewhat distant, cute and cheerful, and so on and so on…

Dere Types

1. Bakadere

Every name on this list is obviously derived from the word “deredere” which means “lovey-dovey”. But every -dere is also connected to a prefix that sets the tone of the entire personality. Bakadere is a male or female character who is somewhat dumb or considered a fool. The word “Baka” means an idiot or a fool, so it makes sense.

Characters with this Dere type are usually sweet, kind, and innocent, but what you most remember about them, of course, is their stupidity and naiveness. Bakadere people are like children when it comes to falling in love. They don’t try to win the other person strategically, but rather putting themselves in embarrassing situations which are always avoidable.

Characters that represent this Dere Type personality: Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece), Bleach (Kon), Minoru Mineta (Boku no Hero Academia), Shiro (Deadman Wonderland), Shin Tsukinami (Diabolik Lovers), Nobi Nobita (Doraemon), Son Goku (Dragon Ball), Seras Victoria (Hellsing), Narancia Ghirga (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto)…

And it makes sense when you learn that a character with Bodere personality will lash out just to hide his/her personality traits.

They are embarrassed about being shy so this is the only way they know how to cope with that feeling. You will easily recognize this personality if you see them using their fists instead of their words. Sometimes it is easier to show emotion than to speak about it.

Though this personality may sound like Kuudere which is on the list, there is one major difference. Dandere doesn’t know how to mask that shyness and appear cool in front of others. On the other hand, Kuudere knows how to act cool. Moreover, Hajidere types are shy towards their love interest, while Dandere types towards everyone. And, to explain the difference between a Bodere and Dandere. Dandere will try to hide recollecting their thoughts, while Bodere will be more aggressive.

Well, that is the way they think is the best when it comes to flirting. Of course, their crush means the world to them and they can come off as Tsundere, but not as stern. Although they aren’t very kind, they can still fall a victim to their emotions. Meaning, they can fall in love and actually put someone before money on their list of priorities. Today, we would call them „fake“, because they won’t look at you twice or be nice to you if they believe you have no money, but as soon as they learn that you are rich or famous? These people will present themselves as strong, cold, and mean to others and there is a good reason for that kind of behavior. With such rude acts, they are often hiding their more kind and caring side.

They don’t want to appear as kind to others because they worry that would make them weak in everyone’s eyes. They are acting tough, to protect their emotions and they are very careful who to trust. People with Kitikudere personality curse a lot and use violence, but they are not as cunning as Yandere types. This dere type is a bit more complex to explain since it has distinct behavior variations. The basic presumption is that people with this personality are cool, collected, and not very expressive. They are analytical which means they will never panic, but rather jump to problem-solving. The word “kuu” in the name of the personality comes from “kuuru” and it is derived from the English word cool. Although they are calm and collected, they can also turn to the dere side. They can alternate between cool and lovey-dovey personality, but the intensity depends on various influences. Influences such as certain moments, people, or other triggers.

I. Coodere

Coodere personality is a variation of Kuudere personality. They are both collected and not expressive. But, the difference is that people with Coodere personality (“coo” is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “cold”), tend to go lovestruck. True, they are cold and emotionless at the beginning, but they develop feelings over time and they express them. People with Kuudere personality may be in love all along, but they won’t show it.

II. Kuutsundere

This name is composed of the words “tsun tsun” (turn away in disgust), “kuudere”, and “deredere”. It basically means that Kuutsundere is a variation of Kuudere and Tsundere personalities. To be more exact, there are two types of this personality – the Apathetic type and the Temperic type. Those who are more apathetic type, they will be, of course, more apathetic. They aren’t really emotional and you rarely see a smirk on their face. Their soul is simply filled with sarcasm and unpoliteness. The Temperic type is a type that can go two ways – emotionless and Hulk-angry behavior.

III. Kuugire

This variation is actually composed of a word we didn’t explain before – the word “gire”. It means “to be mad or to be done with”. There is nothing lovey-dovey about them, meaning they lack sympathy and warm emotions. People with Kuugire personality are sadistic, cruel, always depicted as evil characters.

Nothing satisfies them more than violence over another person and that the power they hold in their hands over someone’s destiny. Although they sound like a Yandere type, they are not. The reason behind that statement is that they lack mental disorders and there is nothing romantic in their emotions. They aren’t driven by love, but pure destruction and need to hurt others.

The name can come from the noun „mayakashi“, meaning „deception“ or „fake“, or it can come from a verb „ma yaka su“ and it can bear meaning „to deceive“ or „to swindle“.

Characters with this type of personality usually try really hard to mess up the plans of the main hero and even kill him/her. How to recognize a Mayadere? Even the love interest will know when these people are in love with them.

Literally, they are walking heart just following them around and beating harder and harder as they follow their crush. Just like Himedere personality, these male characters are arrogant, stuck up, bossy, and very prideful. They will ask others to do their work for them. Well, not ask, but demand.

When it comes to falling in love, they will treat that person with a bit more respect and warmth, but they will not lose their head over them. Even their significant other must be perfect and willing to adore them. It doesn’t sound to be easy when sharing the company with these people, does it? 25. Sadodere

Sadistic, cold, and definitely not empathic. This is what it means to have a Sadodere personality. It comes from the word „sado“, but it was actually shortened from the word „sadomasochistic“. So, yes, people with Sadodere personality love to play with their „prey“ and their feelings. It makes their blood boil when they manipulate and sexually torture other people.

Sadodere types experience pure pleasure in such moments and usually don’t know when is it time to stop, maybe even going a step too far. They will treat everybody the same, but they will become even more sadistic towards the ones they like or love.

You might think we are describing a Yandere type here, but there is a difference in their motivation when doing harm. Sadodere hurt other people simply for the pleasure of it, while Yandere types will do harm to people who might hurt their love interests. But even in those instances, you will recognize that they are using a fake smile. They usually wear dark clothes.

They are often quiet and they won’t stand around when in class. Meaning, they won’t eagerly participate in class, which makes them unmotivated in everyone else’s eyes. They can fall in love and open up about themselves to their love interest, but they will still stay true to their personality. They are like walking shadows who don’t know how to touch the sun.

A type of dere personality that you will find in almost every anime. They are fan-favorite kind of people to watch on screen and we cannot deny that there is a certain appeal about them. The name tsundere is a compound of two words – “tsuntsun” which means grumpy and “deredere” which means lovey-dovey. People with Tsundere personality are usually stern, harsh, angry, and irritated, but also love-struck and embarrassed of their feelings for another person. They will often deny their feelings for someone because they refuse to acknowledge their own feelings.

Their typical behavior is calling their crush „Baka!“ (fool, idiot), short irritated sighs, and stern posture. Because of their personality appeal, they often act like tsundere from beginning to the end, no matter if they have a significant other or they don’t. But that doesn’t mean that they are emotionless. Far from it. People with tsundere personality do feel and they can show their true feelings to the one they love, but it is a long journey to that point. The tsundere personality tends to show less shyness than the Bodere personality and more aggressiveness than the Hiyakasudere personality.

I. Gundere/Gandere

People with this type of personality simply love guns and everything about them. Such characters will often wield a gun in their hands while at the same time blush and show eagerness while firing. They are an extreme version of Tsundere, almost acting like Yandere, but they don’t kill for love. The reason for killing is trying to hide their emotions.

II. Deretsun

People with Deretsun personality are kind and positive with everyone, but they turn cold and angry when facing a person they love or a certain individual.

III. Tsunpure

These characters are quite honest, but there is a catch. They are honest with others, usually quite brutally, but never honest with themselves. People with Tsunpure personality tend to lie to themselves, being quite sensitive and harsh. The word „pure“ comes from the English language, meaning that they are pure of heart or intentions. They don’t know how to control their feelings so they often lash out, but later on, reveal what is bothering them. They are like humans who are learning how to act like a human.

IV. Tsundra/Tsundora

Tsundra personalities don’t have a -dere in their name and that means that there is nothing lovey-dovey about them. Quite the opposite, actually. They are cold, cruel, somewhat chill, and honest like a Tsunpure. What reminds them of Tsundere is their nature to call the other person stupid or annoying, but they say it in a serious manner like they truly believe it. It can be perceived quite cold from their tone of voice. We explained that „tsun“ means grumpy, but it is also derived from the word “tundra” – physical places with extremely low temperatures.

V. Tsunshun

People with Tsunshun personality often act grumpy and cold at the beginning, but what differentiates them from Tsundere is that they won’t change their act, even if they want to. They will not try to win over the person of love interest, rejecting him/her in a rather rude and cold manner. But, eventually will feel sorry for rejecting them. This cycle will be repeated over and over and over again. It is like they are stuck in a loop.

VI. Tsuntere

Shyness dominates their behavior. They still have the angry side („tsun tsun“), but the emotion of shyness is more dominant. People with tsuntere personality are a bit warmer than a Tsundere and aren’t as rude. They could wash their mouth with some soap here and there (meaning that they use foul language), but that’s about it.

VII. Tsun’aho

People with this personality are rarely born with it, but rather learn it through socialization. It is literally a person who decided to be cold, not expressive and not in touch with their feelings that they turned into a literal idiot. But that doesn’t mean that they weren’t an idiot from the start. Others might realize what their true personality is, but they might not be sure because of the constant silly situations people with Tsun’aho personality put themselves in.

VIII. Tsungire

Tsungire might be the most similar to Sadodere personality. They are in no way associated with love, but filled with pure rage. People with Tsungire personality are extremely cold, rude, and violent. There is not a “normal” side of them, which means that they are constantly in a “crazy” state that keeps them on the edge. The reason why they have their own categorization is that they will simply be evil and cruel. Love is never their motivation, while if you look at Yandere, they are driven by love.

IX. BST

BST or “Belligerent Sexual Tension” is often compared to Tsundere, but not to be mistaken, they are two quite separate things. When we talk about Tsundere, we talk about a type of personality. But, when we talk about BST, we talk about a situation created by two characters who are in love with each other. The fun situation is when they both lie to each other and they both act very unapproachable. If you’ve seen Kaguya-sama, the main characters Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are perfect examples of BST and it is highly entertaining to watch. Go watch it. Now! Go, go!

Characters that represent this Dere Type personality: Makise Kurisu and Okabe Rintarou (Steins;Gate), Meryl Stryfe (Trigun), Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul), Tanya Degurechaff (The Saga of Tanya The Evil), Tony Tony Chopper (One Piece), Mary Saotome (Kakegurui), Claire Harvey (Hundred), Chika Ogiue (Genshiken), Shin (Amnesia)…

28. Undere

„Un“ is a shortened version of the word „yes“ and you can hear that word said quite often in animes. It is typical for an Undere personality to be highly agreeable. Anime characters with this personality will always say yes and do their chores because they want to help, not because they need to.

They are kind, loyal, and live to serve those they love. When falling in love, they will do anything their love interest asks of them to do. These characters are created very simple, their life motto is always „yes“ and they don’t think about the consequences. Someone may use their eagerness to help and serve, which also makes them naive too.

29. Utsudere

Utsudere personality might remind you of Shundere personality. They are both associated with sadness, depression, and gloominess, of course, there is a difference. People with Shundere personality are sad from start to finish of the anime and it is just who they are, while it is not like that with Utsudere personality. Characters with Utsudere personality usually are depressed because something happened to them. They have a reason to be sad and it makes them a bit more real or more identifiable with the real emotions. The very word „Utsu“ means depression.

Usually, these people suffer mental or physical bullying, the death of a close person, more negative moments in a short period of time… Such moments impact heavily on their personality later in life and makes it hard for them to go back to their usual self. That means that they were likely happy in the past or more casual. There is always a chance they can bounce back, but they just have to find that someone who will give them a healing hand.

29 – A. Menhera

There is also the term Menhera associated with Utsudere. Everything written about Utsudere applies to Menhera, but there is one major difference. Menhera is a person with mental disorders, and you will recognize them in animes because they are always represented in a „kawai“ manner to normalize suck dark behavior.

They are aesthetically more pleasing to see, but once you dive in a bit deeper, you will notice the disturbing parts. They always hurt themselves, going a step further than people with Utsudere personality. The reason for visually representing them separately from Utsudere is to give attention to people with such problems in real life in order to help them before they go a step too far.

30. Yandere

A true ruler of all dere types! “Yan” comes from the word “yanderu” and it means “to be mentally sick”. It is pretty much the extreme version of a person who is in love with someone, but takes it too far. People with yandere personality are extremely obsessive over their loved ones, loyal and lovestruck.

They will do anything to get that person they love. They will hurt others if they hang out with their crush or just torture them. And they see nothing wrong with that. People with Yandere personality can’t eat, breathe or live without their crush and it pretty much turns into a very unhealthy kind of relationship.

People aren’t often born with this personality, but some tragic or traumatic event from the past triggers this type of behavior. How to recognize them in animes? Insanity and violence are their signatures and if you’ve seen Rena Ryuugu from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, you know what we are talking about.

II. Yandegire

A Yandegire personality (Yandeguire; Y2P) is a relatively new term that basically describes an extreme version of Yandere personality. This personality is often described as violent, angry, unreasonable, and similar. You’ll recognize them as they tend to have two or more personalities. They see their loved one as the sun, their center of the universe, and everyone who is drawn to them, they must die. 31. Yottadere

With them is only alcohol, alcohol and… Yes, alcohol! People with this kind of personality, love to drink. And you will constantly see them with a bottle in their hands. Because it is associated with Japanese culture, they mostly drink sake or beer. But that is not the written rule. It can always be wine or something stronger.

They are always drunk, which makes it rather comedic. Although they constantly share their time with the bottle, there are instances when they are sober. Those are mostly moments when they are with their significant other.

The term is derived from a past form of “you”. That is, the word “yotta” and bears the meaning “drunk”. You can expect from them a change of personality while drunk. And let’s face it, who doesn’t act differently while drunk? These characters do things they would usually do.

From violent acts to crying and blurring out secrets. Eventually, they end up regretting their drunken state. When they fall in love, they can go two ways. And that is what is most interesting about them. You can analyze them day after day and you’ll still find something new and unexplored about them. A human mind is a fragile, yet strong thing.
