About This Game
From Valve (the creators of Counter-Strike, Half-Life and more) comes Left 4 Dead, a co-op action horror game for the PC and Xbox 360 that casts up to four players in an epic struggle for survival against swarming zombie hordes and terrifying mutant monsters.
Set in the immediate aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, L4D’s survival co-op mode lets you blast a path through the infected in four unique “movies,” guiding your survivors across the rooftops of an abandoned metropolis, through rural ghost towns and pitch-black forests in your quest to escape a devastated Ground Zero crawling with infected enemies. Each “movie” is comprised of five large maps, and can be played by one to four human players, with an emphasis on team-based strategy and objectives.
New technology dubbed “the AI Director” is used to generate a unique gameplay experience every time you play. The Director tailors the frequency and ferocity of the zombie attacks to your performance, putting you in the middle of a fast-paced, but not overwhelming, Hollywood horror movie.
Left 4 Dead is the classic zombie shooter game. While it does not have the best of anything, it cannot be denied that this game is solid in most ways. Shooting hordes of zombies in a desolate city or burning airport is very satisfying. Teamplay can be a challenge, though if you have someone who owns this game to play with you, which is likely due to it being in multiple bundles and being a cheap Valve game, it can be very fun.
The main goal is to choose one character, grab some weapons and traverse your way throughout one of the aforementioned locations, in one section of each campaign. For example, you fight your way through the downtown of a city, trying to reach the Mercy Hospital, which has a evacuation set up. You fight hordes, kill countless zombies on the streets, fend off special infected, and even fight a giant ‘tank’ zombie.
+ Gunplay is fast, weightless arcade style.
+ Easy to pick-up and put-down quickly.
+ Low skill floor, moderate skill ceiling.
+ Map design is varied. (city, farm, airport)
+ Successfully completing an Expert campaign or holding off a close horde is satisfying.
+ Workshop mods extend the longevity of this game.
+ Characters are charming and occasionally funny.
+ Title is word play., and I think it is funny. (negligible)
– Teammates can be rude, or uncooperative.
– It’s a somewhat buggy, old source engine game.
– Visuals can sometimes be bland and washed-out.
– Sound effect quality can drop down and distort.
– If you do not wish to download Workshop mods, the longevity of the game shortens a lot.
– Related to the last point, but still relevant, only a few different campaigns to choose from.
Left 4 Dead is a fun, cooperative zombie shooter. If you dislike Source engine games, this may not be the zombie game for you. It has its quirks, whether they are good is up to the individual. Really, this game is not bad if you just like killing zombies. Some games can be more exciting than others, particularly related to teammates and difficulty. I recommend you play Left 4 Dead, especially if you can buy it on sale, or in a bundle.
