People love to drink wine. We drink it with a group of friends on a night out. You can drink it with a partner on a movie night. In fact, we even drink it when we are all alone at home and have nothing to do. It helps us relax and have a wonderful day or night. But, every time you have that kind of fun, your cat is left out of it. You and your friends are joking around with that mellow feeling and your cat can just sit aside and look at you. Now, you can change that because Apollo Peak has invented a beautiful thing. It’s cat wine. Providing that, your cat can join you in your parties. Furthermore, you don’t have to drink wine all alone and feel lonely. Your cat will be your companion whenever you need it.
How did it all start?
Believe it, or not, it all actually started as a joke. One day, Mr. Zavala, the founder of Apollo Peak, was having fun with his friends. At one point he took the label of “Pinot Meow” and slapped it on s wine bottle. As a result, he got an idea of cat wine. He was working in pet food industries before and because of that he understood the pet market. Although he had two partners, he started making this drink by himself. It took him about 6 months to get it to keep its colour, consistency and to look like a wine. Mr Zavala began producing the first bottle of cat wine in November, 2015. At first he called it “snack beverage”, but then he changed it to cat wine.
Mr. Zavala named his business after his cat Apollo, and for the mountains of Denver. At first, he was making cat wines at home in the kitchen. But even so, his business started to grow. He hired employees and moved into a larger building. Initially, they started to produce only two types. Pinot Meow and MosCATo, black and white wine. But eventually they started doing more varieties of pet wine, and not only for cats but for dogs too. Afterwards, the business has blown up. For a start they were selling it only in Denver. Now, they are shipping it all around the world. Finally, in 2016., his company sold $500,000 worth of pet wines.

Apollo Peak is not the only one
A few years back, Japanese company B&H Lifes has introduced the first wine for cats. They called it Nyan Nyan Nouveau. Their mistake was the fact that they used actual grapes. And, accordingly to some veterinarians, they might not be so good for cats to consume. On the other hand, their cat wine is cheaper than the one that Apollo Peak produces. It costs $4 U.S., but unfortunately it is only available in Japan.
Secondly, there is a company called Pet Winery. The founders are Taryn Nahm, who worked in advertising, and her boyfriend, Kai Pfretzschner, a chemist. They started this business after Apollo Peak, in July 2016. Because of that, there has been a discussion about Pet Winery steeling the idea. But, they do have their own viewpoints and ways to produce cat wine. However, I put my trust in Apollo Peak due to the fact that the founder is the one who worked in pet food industries before.
How is Cat Wine made?
When we say cat wine most of the people think of alcohol. And, it is important to mention that cat wine is without fail a non-alcoholic beverage. It is usually made with catnip, beets, water and all natural preservatives. To point it out, Apollo Peak is using organic beets from California and catnip from higher elevations of Colorado. Firstly, beets are for the purpose of coloring the beverage. As the result, this cat beverage really does look like a wine. And, secondly, catnip gives that mellow feeling to your cat. As a consequence, your cat will roll around and play like she/he really is drunk. Although this cat beverage has all natural ingredients, you should still consult with your veterinarian about your cat drinking it.
Is Cat Wine safe for your pet?
Some people and veterinarians still have doubt about the safety of cat wine. Some veterinarians say that although beets are natural and used in some dry foods, beet juice could have sugars. And, that could be problematic to diabetic cats. Others also point out that just because something is marketed as “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean that it is safe or has any health benefits. It is also important to mention that cat wine ingredients are not toxic for cats, but at the same time they are not beneficial for them either. To conclude, it is best to consult a veterinarian before introducing anything new into your cat’s diet.
