Well watching chronologically isn’t the only reason I have put it first, I watched Labyrinth first as well, and felt like I would have enjoyed it better if I have seen Sinbad first. Somehow, for me, the world-building seemed much better in Sinbad, you know, to introduce the viewers into the universe before diving into the main story. But I do also agree with your perspective on this, especially when you get bombarded with things like “what is magi” and “what is rukh”. In the end, I guess it depends on the readers which one they will choose. And thank you for the input, I really appreciate it. I’m not sure now if I should add to the article that people can choose the way they prefer and explain both, perhaps that would confuse them? Or perhaps they will go into reading comments and see this anyway.

Yes, chronologically prequels happen first. And yes, it is not unheard of for some series or OVAs to be released too soon in regards to what else is happening (what immediately comes to mind is the second OVA of Noragami, which was released before the second season but takes place after it, or at least its midpoint, and drops tons of bombshells on unsuspecting viewers). However, having just seen the Magi series, I’m happy to report that’s not the case here.

Labyrinth was written as the first series. As such, it takes particular care to present a brand new world to the viewer; the pacing is of a first entry in a new series. Same with the writing – it slowly draws the viewer in, answering the questions which arise (possibly too often – the question “what are Magis” is asked and answered three or four times over different episodes).

What is Rukh, and its counterpart Black Rukh; who is the king of Balbadd; who are the Magi, especially Yunnan; what is the relationship between the kingdoms; I firmly believe Sinbad is best experienced when you already know the answer to these. In fact, Sinbad is written as an origins story, it assumes you already know how it’s all going to play out in the end.

You only offer the “chronological” argument. That is a valid argument, to be sure. But I feel it is not sufficiently powerful when considered alongside the way the series is written, and how immensely enjoyable it is to discover the world of Magi with Labyrinth (which was made to be the first, and therefore took great care in drawing viewers in) and then to go back and see how Sinbad became the man we get to know later (as well as the others, though I still want to know the full story about Drakken and Judal!).

Also, as it happens, in a google search your opinion is highly rated and highly visible. So someone who is looking for the answer is likely to see your opinion first. Nothing wrong of that; I would just like for your opinion to have, in its comments section, a footnote such as this, indicating that there are alternative persuasive arguments to watch the series in the order it was released. That’s not always desirable in every series; but it’s sometimes even less desirable to watch things chronologically. I have not yet watched Monogatari, but I’m frequently informed it’s not a pleasant experience watching it chronologically. Suzumiya Haruhi I DID watch (I even watched the endless eight in full, and though I won’t be doing it again I’m glad I did), and I figure watching it chronologically would throw the pacing off.

There is a good argument to be made for watching something chronologically. Beware, however, if that is the ONLY argument to be made, and if it is overpowered by other arguments. I would reccommend watching Sinbad AFTER the main show.

I binge watched adventures of sinbad. However i have not yet watched the other two. It is by far one of my favourite programs and it makes perfect sense to me. So in my opinion, if you so desire, you could just watch them in chronological oder. Or you could watch AOS as a standalone. Oh and …WE NEED A SECOND SEASON TO ADVENTURES OF SINBAD!!!
