As an anime fan, one of the two most significant sources for watching anime right now is Crunchyroll and Netflix (at least for me). Netflix has started adding a lot of new anime and some old popular ones to its roster. I think it’s time we give a bit of a look at the current anime on Netflix and rank them accordingly. I have picked 35 shows that Netflix currently has available.

All 35 are good ones to watch, and they vary in genres, so anyone will be able to find something suitable for themselves. Before you start reading, I want to mention that this is my personal opinion, so some people who have seen these shows might disagree with this list ranking. However, I am quite sure that these are the top picks from the currently available shows.

Best Anime on Netflix

35. Castlevania

Genres: Action, Demons, Fantasy, Horror, Vampire

Castlevania is based on a Japanese video game of the same title. The main story follows a vampire hunter who is trying to protect a city under threat. This threat comes from an army of monsters and otherworldly creatures that Dracula controls.

The vampire hunter, Trevor Belmont, wants to end the evil Lord Dracula as his wife, Lisa, is finally executed. The anime builds off of the video game with stunning visuals and animation. Sadly, it only has four episodes. If it had some more time, the show would’ve been even more impressive.

34. Blood of Zeus

Genres: Fantasy, adventure, action

The show revolves around the demigod son of Zeus, Heron. This Greek mythology anime claims that this is one of the tales that got ‘lost to history.’ In this new tale, Heron tries to save Earth and Olympus. As the hybrid son of a god and a human, he tries to bridge the gap between the two.

The show has plenty of characters, such as giants, gods, and mythical mounts. It’s got remarkable storytelling and action sequences too. Within just one season, they included major twists that make it one of the best anime on Netflix.

33. Dorohedoro

Genres:  Action, Comedy, Horror, Magic, Fantasy, Seinen

Kaiman is a resident of the Hole. He has a man’s body but the face of a reptile due to a cruel experiment by magic users. This phenomenon isn’t uncommon as magic users are known to use people from the Hole as tools. Magic users think of them as nothing more than insects.

Most of the time, Hole dwellers are powerless. But Kaiman is determined to exterminate each magic-user he comes across while trying to remember who he was before the experiment. The show’s animation may take some time to get used to, but the dark humor makes you forget about it.

32. Kengan Ashura

Genres:  Action, Martial Arts

In the world of Kengan Ashura, decisions and deals are made not through contracts or meetings. Instead, they hire gladiators. That’s right. This anime is set in a world that is brimming with martial arts, action, and violence. Ouma Tokita is trying to prove himself as the strongest fighter.

After a series of events, he lands a manager and thus begins his ruthless journey with other fighters. Do they have what it takes? I almost couldn’t handle the CGI in this anime, but there’s a great story being told if you look past it.

31. Beastars

Genres: Slice of Life, Psychological, Drama, Shounen

This anime has got it all. I was a bit wary at first, seeing as the main characters were animals, not humans. But the first episode alone will make you throw away any qualms because it’s so amazing. The opening song, the animation, direction, plot – what’s not to appreciate? The show has made its own society of carnivores and herbivores.

They’ve learned to live in harmony. That is until a herbivore is murdered at the hands of a carnivore. Tensions are high as the culprit is not caught. I loved how they explored so many themes and depicted the internal conflict of the main character, Legoshi. This is easily one of the best anime on Netflix.

30. Japan Sinks

Genres: Sci-Fi, Drama

Everything is normal and ordinary in the Mutou household. The parents have stable jobs, while the children focus on games or sports for leisure. However, everything changes when an earthquake strikes Japan. It isn’t just any normal earthquake either.

It has the power to obliterate the country in an instant. Society starts crumbling as the nation starts sinking into the ocean. In this apocalyptic setting, the Mutou family struggles to survive and learn how to cope with loss. I expected more emphasis on the natural disaster itself, but I liked how the characters got to shine instead.

29. B-the beginning

Genres:  Action, Mystery, Police, Psychological, Supernatural, Thriller

“Killer B” is a notorious vigilante on the islands of Cremona. Killer B takes justice into his own hands and, as a result, has gained both fans and enemies. The Royal Investigation Service is unable to apprehend this criminal due to his superhuman abilities.

To put an end to the cat and mouse chase, they call Keith Flick a seasoned detective. Keith was transferred to the Archives Department after he faced a personal loss. Crimes in Cremona start to build up rapidly, and it soon becomes clear that Killer B is not the only one responsible.

28. Sirius the Jaeger

Genres: Action, Historical, Supernatural, Vampire

Set in the year 1930, Tokyo has an infestation of vampires who feast upon its citizens. The Jaegers, a diverse group of individuals, are hired to hunt down the vampires who prey on innocent people. With the help of various disguises, the Jaegers battle the vampires without mercy.

However, it’s not for humanity’s sake. The real goal they’re after is the mystical Ark of Sirius. This powerful artifact has the power to change the world. But who will get it in the end? This is one of the rare vampire animes that’s actually good.

27. The Way of the Househusband

Genres:  Slice of Life, Comedy, Romance

The “Immortal Tatsu” is a name used to strike fear in law officials and hardened criminals alike. The legendary yakuza who beat a rival gang with just a lead pipe resurfaces with a new goal. Equipped with an apron, Tatsu wants to make an honest living as a house husband.

But as it turns out, giving up violence and adapting to mundane tasks might not be that easy. He’s graduated from a battlefield of violence to one known as supermarket sales. As much as he tries to live peacefully, misunderstandings always seem to follow him.

26. High-rise invasion

Genres:  Action, Mystery, Horror

Yuri Honjou finds herself in a traumatizing situation. Upon witnessing a man get murdered with an ax, the 16-year-old tries her best to flee from the masked murderer. However, she realizes that there’s nowhere to run as all the doors are mysteriously locked. In a desperate attempt, she runs to the rooftop, but all she sees are high-rise buildings.

Even though she trembles in fear and despair, she learns that her brother is also trapped in a strange place. Yuri makes up her mind to find her brother no matter what and escape together. This won’t be an easy feat, though, as it turns out that there are more masked murderers with sick and vile desires.

25. Haikyu!!

Genres: Comedy, Sports

Hinata Shoya is often teased for his short height and told that he wouldn’t be able to do things that his others who have height will do. But things change for him when he saw a local Volleyball match featuring Karasuno High’s ACE player who was short in stature just like him, but no one was able to reach higher than him in the air, and he ruled the court single-handed. Filled with inspiration, enthusiasm, and an utter willingness to be the someone he just saw, he instantly started with Volleyball.

The story revolves around how he ends up at Karasuno High, which has not been the same since he meets his new teammates and has different characters like Kageyama, his friend/nemesis who happened to be on the same team. Someone who needs a little inspiration or motivation should go for this anime, and there are chances that you would itch to be on that volleyball court after you’re finished with the first season.

24. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma

Genre: Comedy, Cooking, Slice of life

Sōma Yukihira is a teenager who spends most of his day cutting vegetables, washing dishes, garnishing platters. Overall he’s helping his old man manage their family restaurant. The restaurant is quite popular due to his old man’s delicious culinary skills. But his dad has to move away for someday to take care of some business. Now that he has some free time, why not join a Culinary school.

He went on to join one of the elite schools, Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, a place where you have meager chances of becoming a graduate if you fail to bring that special chef’s touch. He being an underdog and coming from a family that is not that renowned for their culinary skills, faces a hard time among peers who belong to the very same category. This one anime can make your stomach growl a dozen times whenever they are preparing something exquisite and is a perfect pick for someone who loves food.

23. Steins; Gate

Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller

Mad scientist Hououin Kyouma has been out to unravel the mysteries of this world by the use of his scientific knowledge, or let’s say at least he thinks he can. We are talking about the lead of the show, Rintarou Okabe, who is a young scientist making weird gadgets and testing them out in his hideout or so-called science lab along with his funny friends. He has given himself an alter ego Hououin Kyouma and often sticks his nose where he shouldn’t but gets away doing such things anyway.

The arc stirs up when he accidentally created a machine that makes bananas go weird, seems funny, right? But that same machine was discovered to be a time-traveling device. With the creation of such a powerful device, he had overtaken a significant responsibility for his head and had to bear with the consequences as well. The plot revolves around him and his friends involved in events that they need to take care of. If time-traveling, real-world references, and plots that contain the power to blow your mind are something you’re into then Steins; Gate should be your pick.

22. Psycho-Pass

Genre: Crime Fiction, Cyberpunk, Dystopia

How do you define good or bad, or is it a relative concept? Its a question many had or will fail to answer, and on some level, we know that everything has two sides, but imagine having a set pattern for judging everything that you do. Psycho-Pass is an anime that revolves around the same idea, and the term ‘Psycho-Pass’ is used as a scale upon which people would be judged, and then decisions would be made for them.

Akane Tsunemori is an investigator, and she is new to the force, which is an organization made for dealing with perpetrators violating their ‘psycho-pass’ and going beyond a level where they needed to be either quarantined or executed. The new investigator follows up cases and gets involved in events that can mess up one’s mind to which she, later on, discovered to be her regular everyday routine in the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division. The plot may stir up some cringe emotions and may make you bitter mid-way in some episodes, but it has made a name for itself for a reason.

21. My Hero Academia

Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Superhero fiction

What if you want to be something or do something, but you just can’t? Izuku Midoriya is one flawed child born with no superpowers or quirks in a world where having some quirk is normal and well! Kind of necessary for a typical day to day life. But despite the fact being powerless, he has aspirations for becoming the best superhero just like his idol ‘All-Might.’ All Might is praised, loved, and adored by all due to his massive strength and the fact that he has been the symbol for peace for a long time.

Midoriya’s life took a turn when he leaped forward to help a friend in need and got noticed by someone in the crowd, All-Might himself. His life took a 360-degree turn from that moment onwards and the goal, and he took the first step towards the journey he always wanted to be on. The anime packs an immense amount of motivation, which sometimes overflows and has all the qualities we want in an inspirational anime.

gokudolls - best anime on netflix

20. Back Street Girls: Gokudolls

Genres: Comedy, Seinen, Ecchi

I was shocked when I saw this anime on Netflix as it’s one of those anime with a lot of “what the fuck” moments. The story takes place as three Yakuza mess up something, and their boss calls them worthless and sends them to Thailand for a sex-changing operation.  After the sex-change surgery, they come back and are forced to work as idols. This show has a lot of R rated scenes, comedy, and drinking.

charlotte - best anime on netflix

19. Charlotte

Genres: Drama, School, Superpowers

Charlotte follows the story of Yuu Otosaka, who has a strange ability. He can slip into other people’s minds and control them for 5 seconds. Yuu abuses this power to cheat on exams and copy other people’s answers. One day he is caught by Nao Tomori, another person who has strange abilities. She invites Yuu to enroll in the same school as she and joins a group of friends who work together to help those abusing their powers come to the right side.  This is one of my favorite Anime on Netflix as it has an emotional story.

Vampire Knight - best anime on netflix

18. Vampire Knight

Genres: Drama, Mystery, Shoujo, Supernatural, Vampire, Romance

One of the few vampire anime on Netflix and one of my favorites when it comes to Vampires. I would have ranked this anime much higher if it was finished. However, there are only two seasons, so if you want to finish the series, you will have to switch to the manga.  The story takes place at Cross Academy, which has two classes. The night class and the day class, as you can assume probably, the night class are vampires. Zero Kiryuu and Yuuki Cross are the prefects of this school and the only students who know about vampires’ existence.

toradora - best anime on netflix

17. Toradora

Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Romance, School

Taiga Aisaka meets Ryuuji Takasu, and their meeting is akin to a tiger meeting a dragon. This slice of life anime starts with the right amount of comedy, but as the story progresses, the romance keeps maturing. This romance comedy anime does not depend on the usual romantic cliches and hence is an exciting watch. While Taiga Aisaka is a small, doll-like student, Ryuuji Takasu is a kind person with an intimidating face giving others a wrong impression.

One day, both cross paths, and soon they find out that they love the other’s best friend, respectively. The odd duo starts to help each other to win the love of their respective crushes.  The storyline is interesting as it is not predictable, and the comedy is fresh and throughout. If you love the first episode, you are going to enjoy watching this anime on Netflix.

Magi - Adventures of Sinbad - Best Anime on Netflix

16. Magi: Adventure of Sinbad

Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen, Magic

If you are looking for an adventure anime on Netflix, then Magi is the show for you. It follows the story of Sinbad as he explores the world and grows from a young boy to a mature character. One day in the Tison Village, Sinbad meets Yunan. Yunan tells Sinbad that what he is looking for is located in a dangerous dungeon. After their meeting, Sinbad’s life changes forever.  There are more Magi series than this one, so I advise checking our Magi watch order (link below).

your lie in april - best anime on netflix

15. Your Lie In April

Genres: Music, Romance, Drama, School, Shounen

Your Lie in April, also known as Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, is one of my favorite Musical anime on Netflix. I always liked anime with a music setting, and if I had to rank them, Your Lie in April would be in my top 3. However, I prefer some other genres more, so it’s ranked lower on this list. Kousei Arima had a downfall in music when his mother died. Due to a lot of grief, he can not enjoy music anymore. However, that changes when he meets a violinist Kaori Miyazono who brings him back into the world of music.

saint seya - best anime on netflix

14. Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas

Genres: Martial Arts, Shounen, Super Power, Action, Adventure

If you have heard of Saint Seiya, you might have heard about the original series released in 1986. The Lost Canvas is the prequel to the original series. However, it was published in 2009. And serves as its own story and can be watched standalone. On the other hand, if you prefer to watch both, then you should.  When I first saw this anime on Netflix, I was reluctant to view it. However, a friend recommended it to me, so I decided to watch it, and I enjoyed it.

baki - best anime on netflix

13. Baki

Therefore, all of the former inmates head to Tokyo to face Baki and determine who the strongest fighter is.

violet evergarden - best anime on netflix

12. Violet Evergarden

Genres: Fantasy, Drama, Slice of Life

Violet Evergarden was raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines during The Great War. However, war has come to an end. And the continent Telesis that just experienced war is now flourishing again. Violet soon finds herself working at CH Postal Services. She has indeed turned a new page in her life, or so she thought. One day, because of some circumstances (I don’t want to put spoilers), Violet becomes an “Auto Memory Doll.”

Okay, I know that this synopsis might sound confusing, but the story of Violet Evergarden is outstanding, and  I did not want to spoil anything. I would recommend this as one of my favorite anime on Netflix. The visuals and the music are amazing, and I was stunned when I started watching it. I have to say that I also loved the character development this series had.

the disastrous life of saiki k - best comedy anime

11. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Genres: Comedy, School, Supernatural, Slice of  Life, Shounen

Kusuo Saiki might seem like another regular student (or not, with that pink hair who wouldn’t think that he’s the MC). As I was saying, Kusou strives to have a normal life, but his pink hair attracts too many bullies. Okay, I’m just kidding; it’s not the hair. Kusou has psychic abilities, which to some people, might feel like a gift. However, Kusou does not consider his powers as a gift.

On the contrary, he believes that many misfortunes happen to him due to these powers. And all he wants is a carefree life.  The Disastrous Life of Saiki K earns its spot as one of the best comedy anime on Netflix.

3 gatsu no lion - best slice of life anime

10. 3 Gatsu no Lion

Genres: Drama, Slice of Life, Game, Seinen

3-Gatsu no Lion follows Rei as he battles his way through the Shogi business. He is a professional Shogi player, and due to all of the stress from the career, he is quite drained both emotionally and physically. The story follows Rei as he battles his emotions and career-related problems, along with Akira, Hinata, and Momo. The three Kawamoto sisters share a deep bond with Rei and help him resolve his issues.

seven deadly sins

09. The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins are legendary knights who turned their backs on their friends to overthrow the ruler of Liones. However, they were defeated by the Holy Knights. Rumored to be still alive, ten years pass as no one hears a thing about The Seven Deadly Sins. During the absence of the Sins, the Holy Knights organize a coup d’ état. Therefore, becoming the new tyrannical rulers of Liones.

The Knights tried to murder the royal family. However, Elizabeth escaped (3rd princess of Liones). To survive and retake her Kingdom, she seeks out the help of the Seven Deadly Sins.  If you like an adventure with a lot of action, fighting scenes, characters you can grow to love, and a story that drives you, then I’d recommend you to watch this anime on Netflix.

devilman crybaby - best anime on netflix

08. Devilman Crybaby

Genres: Action, Horror, Dementia, Supernatural, Demons

Devilman Crybaby is a Netflix original adaptation of the old Devilman series. If you want to know the watching order, I will include a link below. I loved this series when it first aired due to many different things. The first thing that captivated me was the music and the opening, it was excellent, and the opening was intriguing. However, when I started watching the episode, I was astonished at how “bad” the art is.

Or that’s what I thought. What seemed to be “bad” art at first actually ended up being a unique form of animation. And that animation is one of the main things that make you fall in love with this anime, and it gives it that unique vibe you can not find in any other show. The story follows Akira Fudou, who, under certain circumstances, becomes a Devilman.

erased - best anime on netflix

07. Erased

Genres: Seinen, Psychological, Supernatural, Mystery

Erased or Boku Dake ga Inai Machi was released three years ago (2016), and that was a period when I got into following seasonal anime. I’d check every new one first three episodes and decide which ones to continue. Therefore, I found myself discovering this great Seinen anime. Also known as Erased in the English version. The story involves time travel, which was well made, in my opinion, in this anime. It was not forced, over-used, or over-complicated. Instead, it served as a unique element for the main story.

If you’re looking for a great binge-watch-worthy anime on Netflix, then you are going to love Boku Dake ga Inai Machi.

one punch man - best anime on netflix

06. One-Punch Man

Genres: Comedy, Action, Super Power, Sci-Fi, Parody, Seinen

A great mix of comedy, violence, gore, and bloodshed makes One Punch Man one of my favorite anime on Netflix. Although the anime is quite popular, some people did not like the gore and violence in it. However, I did not have any problems with it. And the violence blended in really well with the comedy. Not to mention the animation, which is done by Madhouse studio.

If you have not seen One Punch Man yet, you surely are missing out on an entertaining show. The story follows Saitama, probably the strongest character in the One Punch Man universe. He started being a hero for fun but then became too strong, and it takes him only one punch to destroy his opponents. Therefore Saitama is quite depressed when it comes to his work, as he struggles to find his lost passion.

05. Ajin: Demi-Human

Genres: Seinen, Mystery, Action, Supernatural, Horror

Ajin is one of a few anime on Netflix that I recommend more often. And the reason why I do it is mainly because many people avoid this anime. The reason why they avoid it is primarily due to CGI. Now I know that a lot of people dislike CGI. However, Ajin is done well, and it might look a bit different at first. But you get used to it fast, and the CGI is not poorly done. It’s well done, and the animation overall is good. The anime has a dark setting and focuses on things such as demi-humans, death, immortality, terrorism, secret military projects, and more. If you like such shows, then this is another good one for you.

kakegurui - best anime on netflix

04. Kakegurui

Genres: Gambling, Psychological, School, Drama,  Thriller, Seinen

Kakegurui is a new show, an original anime by Netflix. At first, I avoided this anime for some reason, but then I got into it, and I was surprised by what I was missing out on. If we are talking about the gambling adult anime series, then Kakegurui is not better than Kaiji when it comes to the tension and the hype the show can provide. However, the show still gives off that badass vibe.

And the soundtracks used in the anime were excellent. The story follows Yumeko Jabami, a casual high school girl, or so you would have thought. Yumeko is a gambling addict that loves the thrill and addiction the only gamble can provide her. She spends a lot of money and is often reckless when it comes to gambling. Everything starts when she enrolls in a new school, which is a school run by gambling.

Update: The 2nd season has been released, and the anime is going well. I would still recommend it as a good watch.

code geass - best anime on netflix

03. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Genres: Psychological,  Military, Mecha, Action, Sci-Fi, Super Power, Drama

Code Geass deserves its place on this list of best anime on Netflix. Usually, I’m not too fond of the mecha genre. However, this anime is an exception due to its badass main character and intriguing story. If I were comparing anime in the category of “battle of wits,” I would rank this anime on the same spot as Death Note. It is as thrilling and exciting to watch as Death Note was to me.

The story follows Lelouche Lamperouge, a lazy genius who loves to gamble his money on chess games. One day after his chess match, he is going back to school with his friend Rivalz. When a terrorist attack happens, and Lelouch gets involved in it. The story starts going much deeper after that point. I believe that you will like it if you want war, strategy, psychological, and mecha type of anime.

fullmetal alchemist - brotherhood - best anime on netflix

02. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Genres: Shounen, Drama, Action, Comedy, Adventure, Magic, Fantasy, Military

Alongside Code Geass and Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is one of the world-renowned anime. Although this anime is quite popular, that does not mean that it’s as good as some people say. Let’s be realistic; many people over-hype particular anime, myself included, at specific points. Therefore, some people might not like this anime or any particular other anime among the top three. For example, I love Code Geass, but some people don’t like it because of the mecha (not that I’m much of a mecha fan myself).

Despite all of the positivity or negativity following this well-known title, I would still recommend it as a good try. The story follows two brothers who set out on a search for the philosopher’s stone after suffering a tragic accident in their childhood. If you love adventure with a mix of proper character development, then you should try watching this anime on Netflix.

death note - best anime on netflix

01. Death Note

Genres: Psychological, Thriller, Mystery, Supernatural, Seinen

A classic anime series that I would expect most people to know or have at least heard about. Nonetheless, I will still add it for those who have not seen it yet. The anime is great, and it makes you think about what is right and what is wrong. The thoughts that mostly went through my head were about thinking about what I would do in the main character’s situation.

It is an interesting story, and it touches on that dark human side. The story follows Light Yagami when he accidentally comes across a Death Note. Anyone whose name is written in it shall die. Perplexed with what to do with the Notebook, Yagami takes it home. The story then becomes much more profound. However, I will not talk more about it. If you have not seen it, check out this anime on Netflix, it will be worth your time.

  1. Thanks for the information, it’s great in that I like the same ones as you, I have read most of those and watched a few.
