Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Earlier this year, Toei Animation and Funimation unveiled an upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie. Originally featuring a teaser with Goku, the first trailer gave away little info. Therefore, with the Dragon Ball Super anime finished, Toei promised more Dragon Ball Super content. Enter the latest movie featuring Broly.
Earlier this July, Akira Toriyama revealed the villain of the upcoming movie. The latest movie features Broly, a major villain from a past series entry. The character originally debuted in the 8th Dragon Ball Z movie – Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan. The tale involves Goku and his friends facing off against perhaps their most powerful threat. An anomaly that wiped out an entire galaxy, this beast could gain power from his anger. Moreover, his power boosted due to his animosity towards Kakarot (Goku). Born with a power level of 10,000, he was feared among the Saiyan royalty. King Vegeta himself banished Broly from their home world.
Broly returned in subsequent movies – Broly: Second Coming and Bio-Broly. The latter film was less important and featured a disfigured clone of the character. However, the former featured Broly at his strongest. Battling against Gohan, Broly threatened to destroy the Earth at one point. This movie pitted Gohan, Goten, and Trunks in a near-impossible situation. Consequently, Broly’s popularity grew immensely. Despite the movies not being canon to the main series, he has appeared in many of the games. His most recent outing included being part of the DLC for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Despite the lack of canon appearance for the character, he was referenced in Dragon Ball Super. Kale, a Saiyan from Universe 6, had the power to undergo a similar transformation.
The upcoming movie
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), Funimation unveiled the latest trailer to the movie. Set after the events of Dragon Ball Super, this features an all-new take on the Broly character. Therefore, as he was originally part of a non-canon episode, this will be Toriyama’s personal take at writing him into series canon. Thus, this acts as a sort of character reboot.
Given what we’ve seen, Broly forces Goku to fight in his Super Saiyan Blue forms. Originally contesting Goku and Gohan as Super Saiyans, this version features Broly far more powerful than before. This is similar to Frieza’s return in the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ film and the subsequent Dragon Ball Super adaptation. The trailer features a returning character as well: Paragus, the father of Broly from Movie 8. In addition, the trailer features Vegeta and Frieza facing off against the Legendary Super Saiyan.
Broly was known as an indomitable force of a villain, even compared to other villain movie counterparts. His buff physique and constantly growing power gave him the feature of a near-unbeatable villain in his movies.
