Before the traffic accident, she originally had two characters inside her, a male personality named Shiki (織), and the original female personality Shiki (式). Children born into the Ryougi family are generally male and are raised with two identities, so the male identity is customarily called the “yang” identity, while the female is called the “yin” identity. It is easy to tell which Shiki is talking at a given time because they both have a well-defined style of talking, most particularly that the female Shiki refers to herself with the identity known as Watashi (私), while male Shiki refers to himself as Ore (俺).

After getting up from her coma, Shiki finds out that she can no longer feel the male Shiki’s existence and assumes that he perished because of the accident. She also feels a distance between her memories before the accident, and while she knows that she is Shiki, she does not feel that she is. In the hopes of recovering herself and the “dead” Shiki, she puts on a cold veil that somewhat similar to the male Shiki’s and tries to behave as the female Shiki did. 9. Dorohedoro

Rating: 8.57

Best Horror Manga #9

Hole—a dark, rickety, and chaotic district where the powerful prey on the weak and death is an ordinary affair—is all but befitting of the name given to it. A kingdom detached from law and ethics, it is a testing place to the magic users who control it. As a race inhabiting the highest rundles of their society, the magic users think of the residents of Hole as no more than insects. Butchered, disfigured, and made experiments without a second thought, the helpless Hole dwellers occupy the halls of Hole’s hospital on a daily basis.

Owning the free access to and from the dump, and with little opposition to their dominance, the magic users appear unconquerable to most—except for a few. Kaiman, more reptile than man, is one such person. He hunts them on a careless quest for answers with only a faithful pair of blades and his resistance to magic. Damned by his appearance and tortured by bad dreams, magic users are his only sign to reinstating his life to normal. With his biggest obstacle being his stomach, his female partner Nikaidou, who runs the restaurant Hungry Bug, is his greatest ally.

Set in a tough world of infernal design, Dorohedoro manages a healthy combination of comedy and lightheartedness with demise and slaughter. Taking a lot of twists and turns while backing the lives of Hole’s inhabitants, it intertwines a distinctive world of otherworldly origin and drab appearance not for the easily nauseated or easily disturbed.
